The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) has set up international regulations to protect the marine environment: MARPOL 73/78 (Marine Pollution from Ships). MARPOL contains five Annexes:

Annex I:   Oil

Annex II:  Noxious liquid substances in bulk

Annex III: Harmful substances carried by sea in packaged form

Annex IV: Sewage

Annex V:  Garbage

Facilities in Amsterdam Seaports are equipped to handle waste of annex I, II, IV and V.
