Biggest container ship to have ever visited Port of Amsterdam

2 March 2007
On February 23, the MS Hong Kong Express called at the Port of Amsterdam. It is the biggest container ship to have ever visited this port. The Hong Kong Express has a length of 320 meters, a width of 43 meters, a deadweight tonnage of 100,000 tons, as well as a capacity of 8,000 TEUs.

The MS Hong Kong Express – belonging to the Hapag Lloyd shipping company – paid its first visit to Amsterdam. It sails on the so-called EU-2 loop, which is part of the Asia-Europe service operated by the Grand Alliance group (a joint venture between four shipping companies, namely Hapag Lloyd, NYK, OOCL and Misc).

The Hong Kong Express is part of the next-generation large container ships that will increasingly be deployed on the service to the Far East to replace the current fleet of 6,500-TEU ships.

The ultramodern Ceres Paragon Terminal handled this giant of the sea, which brought in some 1,500 shipping containers. To add luster to the vessel’s maiden call, Cor Oudendijk – Director of Shipping of the Port of Amsterdam – presented the captain of the Hong Kong Express with a memento featuring the port’s coat of arms.
