One of the requirements of this Directive is to prepare noise maps by qualified authorities designated by the Member States. For this reason the port of Amsterdam initiated the project Noise Management in European Ports (NoMEPorts).
The objectives of the NoMEPorts project are to reduce noise and noise-related annoyance by developing noise maps, actions plans and a management system. The noise maps and management system will be established using a new EU noise calculation method and a noise database developed in the EU projects HARMONOISE and IMAGINE. Subsequently a good practice guide will be prepared on efficient noise mapping and management for port industrial areas.
In addition to the port of Amsterdam several other European port authorities are fully participating in the NoMEPorts project, including port of Livorno, port of Hamburg, port of Copenhagen/Malmö, port of Civitavecchia and port of Valencia. The ports of Rotterdam, Bremen, Göteborg, Tenerife and Oslo will contribute to the project as a observer ports panel. Further partners include DGMR (noise management consultant), EcoPorts Foundation (dissemination), Cardiff University (scientific coordination) and Willems & Van den Wildenberg (project support).
The NoMEPorts project is funded for 50% by the LIFE-Environment 2005 programme of the European Commission, which contributes to the development of innovative and integrated methods, and community environment policy.
The NoMEPorts project expects to produce a level playing field for noise mapping and management in industrial areas of European ports and promotes the use of uniform guidelines, which are developed in the project.
