Project IJsei
The IJsei project is the umbrella name for the various plans on the IJside of the ‘Stationseiland’. Because of this handling of public transport around the central station will improve considerably.

'Stationseiland' Amsterdam

Amsterdam Central Station is built on the ‘Stationseiland’ or Station Island and is visited by 240,000 travellers daily. Amsterdam’s Central Station is the most important and largest transport interchange in the Netherlands. Train, bus, tram, metro, taxi and public transport by water all meet here. There are also many travellers who travel by foot or bicycle. With the construction of the North/South line and the IJtram the number of transfer possibilities will further increase.

Room for growth

To give room to this growth, the municipality of Amsterdam, Dutch railways and the Ministry of Transport decided that the Central Station and its surroundings would have to be radically renovated. The upgrading of Station Island is an enormous operation. It is made up of multiple projects with various clients. Elongated platforms, underground bicycle shelters, a central metro hall under Station Square and a stop for the IJtram are just some of the alterations that will be introduced.

There will also be radical changes on the IJ-side of Station Island to make public transport run more smoothly.

Changes to the Station Island

  • A car tunnel
  • A bus station
  • A roof to this bus station
  • The bridges at the eastern and western entrance

Role Port of Amsterdam

For the construction of the bus station, the Station Island will be expanded. This expansion will be realised in the IJ. The work will be done from the water as much as possible, to prevent hinder from truck traffic on the roads in the city. Port of Amsterdam will ensure that the hinder will be minimal for ships and that safety can be guaranteed.
