The Public Checkpoint Amsterdam is a veterinary inspection point for cattle, meat and fish. It is located in the Amerikahaven and is a joint initiative between Port of Amsterdam and Amsterdam Coldstore Solutions.
Meat and fish products from outside the European Union are not allowed onto the Dutch market without careful clearance. Both frozen and chilled fish and meat products have to be inspected and approved first. The inspections are done by the Rijksdienst voor keuring van Vee en Vlees (the government service for inspection of cattle and meat).
Public Checkpoint Amsterdam is on the site of the Multimodal Transport centre Westpoint by the Amerikahaven. Soon it will also be possible to offer other products for inspection at the checkpoint, such as feed. The Public Checkpoint Amsterdam is a so-called 'interior inspection post' or SIP. This is a sort of access portal to the European market. Once products are approved at their place of entry (in this case an SIP) then they can be transported anywhere else in the European Union without further inspections.
This is a government service (the RVV) that is part of the Ministry of Health. The RVV checks whether public health demands are properly met with regards to import, export or production of animals, feed and animal food products.
The RVV also supervises whether hygiene, animal welfare and corporate layout regulations are upheld. The RVV performs these inspections at the Public Checkpoint Amsterdam. The RVV also regularly performs inspections in slaughterhouses and cold stores.
