Amsterdam is an energy port. Europe and other countries have a large demand for energy. An important part of the components for this energy is transshipped through the Port of Amsterdam. For the most part it regards fossil energy generated from oil products and coal. Simutaneously the share of sustainable energy in Amsterdam is rising.
Oil products and coal are good for 70% of the Port of Amsterdam throughput. A small portion of it is used for power generation for the city of Amsterdam. For the most part the products are intended for the European and global market. The past years Amsterdam has developed into one of the leading ports worldwide when it comes to coal. It has also shown a tremendous growth in oil products and by now has become one of the largest petrol ports in the world.
The Port of Amsterdam aims to be one of most sustainable ports of Europe by 2020. To achieve this goal the Port of Amsterdam offers facilities to partially transit their share of fossil energy to sustainable energy. It is expected that approximately 20% of the fossil fuels will be replaced by sustainable energy by 2020.
